Solis by Rob Moore
‘To confine our attention to terrestrial matters would be to limit the human spirit.’- Professor Stephen Hawking
Our knowledge of the solar system and its worlds is rapidly increasing and looking to the future; in fact, it will take many decades to decipher the data we already have from our explorations. Solis, meaning of the Sun, is an exhibition of six handcrafted assemblage boxes by Kinetic Artist, Rob Moore. As an artist, he is equally intrigued by the romance and nostalgia of earlier understandings and discoveries by drawing inspiration from old illustrations and preserving and ‘feeling’ what these mysterious worlds evoke.
These assemblages, with their own lighting and kinetic movements, are a departure from Rob’s usual metalwork creations, with the box serving very well to elevate and protect in a way that can focus and even alter an object’s meaning. The revolving movements, except the Sun, operate on a timer and activate every few minutes, capturing the eye of those passing by and creating a moment of pause.
About the Artist
Rob Moore is a Norfolk-based artist, who creates kinetic and rolling ball sculptures. Uniting artistic concepts with engineering, he is drawn to their ability to engage with an audience on many levels.
The process of his kinetic sculptures evolves from linear drawings, in which each hand-bent curve is unique and personal, with flowing forms translated into stainless steel. Each sculpture has a rough set of ideas, but the layout often changes as the track runs compete for space, reflecting the evolving nature throughout the construction process.
