Site Indeterminate by Beñat Olaberria
Exhibition
“Spatially incorrect, visually undefinable, consciously imprecise, intentionally unclear and out of focus, in this body of work made by collaging discarded drawings and sketches from the architect’s bin with my own mark-making, I delineate, map and depict spaces and time fragments that share a nonspecific quality, and yet can still look strangely familiar: non-places and non-moments of our everyday existence.
For six hours, I created images of spaces which are not necessarily real places but places of my mind. Exploring and distorting tangible references which became unreal, unknown and unpredicted where the images evolved as places somewhere in-between spaces, places and experiences.
As in an unplanned walk, I allowed myself to get lost into unknown territories accepting the not knowing of my visual destination. These non-spaces are not only related to the transitional and infertile places of our everyday existence, but also to real and tangible places and experiences that we consciously or unconsciously decide not to recall.
On these six sketchbooks, I deal with the unclear, the blurred, and the unfocused spaces by taking an spontaneous visual walk through my visual edgelands and memory peripheries; describing undefined landscapes, unrecorded experiences and unconscious states of mind. A walk without a clear destination, a walk without a clear path to follow where the decisions to be made were dictated by itself.”
