Sitting at the heart of a former agricultural estate, our Suffolk Farmstead development involved the refurbishment and reconfiguration of a Grade II listed farmhouse and the conversion of its associated agricultural buildings into a substantial private residence. We painstakingly restored the timber frame of the Suffolk Barn which stands at the heart of the complex and improved its relationship with all parts of the working farm, including the house itself.
The residence has a combination of contemporary glazed pavilions built from the ground up and double-height spaces where the historic timbers can be experienced. Each architectural element has an invaluable role to play, the exposed concrete kitchen area discrete from, nonetheless well-integrated with the redbrick living area, the limewashed sleeping quarters, or the former cowshed, now in use as an exclusive gym and fitness club.
There has been a concerted effort made on the parts of both the architects and the clients to rethink modes of living in and working with the English countryside from all vantage points. The glass links between the architectural elements frame spectacular views across the farm and the wider East Anglian landscape. There has been no compromise made in terms of the materials used or preserved as part of the distinguished architectural fabric.
