A Brief History of Wimbledon
Wimbledon, located in southwest London is a desirable London suburb which plays host to the annual Wimbledon Tennis Championships. Wimbledon has been inhabited since the iron age when Hill Fort on Wimbledon Common is thought to have been constructed. The Common remains one of the largest areas of common land in London. Colloquially, Wimbledon is often referred to in two parts: ‘the village’ and ‘the town’. Wimbledon village sits at the top of the hill and is connected to ‘the town’ via Wimbledon Hill Road. ‘The town’ developed organically after the construction of the railway station in 1838. The village has a different feel from the town. The High Street has boutique shops and restaurants and the roads radiating from the High Street have some of the highest property values in London. Large expanses of green space surround the village: Wimbledon Common to the west and Wimbledon Park to the north. It is this leafy openness that is part of the attraction to residents.

Rodić Davidson have worked on projects in Wimbledon since the inception of the Practice in 2006. The practice has undertaken many projects in the village such as Corner Cottage. There are many Conservation Architecture Areas in Wimbledon and the area broadly falls within either London Borough of Merton or the London Borough of Wandsworth. The High Street and adjacent roads in the village lie within the Wimbledon Village Conservation Area. This area was one of the first to be designated when Conservation Areas were first created by the Civic Amenities Act of 1967. The area was extended in 1976 and then again in 2007. The Conservation Area contains a number of distinctive houses and listed buildings and the Conservation Area statement makes specific reference to, ‘the charm, character and uniqueness of the detailing of the buildings and the quality of the streetscape and the open spaces’
The area is much loved by residents and business owners and local interest and amenity groups abound. One example is the Wimbledon Society which is committed to protecting all local amenities and characteristics of the district ‘to promote an interest in local history and wildlife, and to preserve objects of historical and natural interest’. The planning and environment committee monitor planning applications, make representations to the council, assess and comment on revisions to planning policies and guidelines.

Our Work as Architects in SW19
Rodić Davidson have completed a range of renovations and extensions in the Wimbledon area, one example being Corner Cottage which featured in Don’t Move, Improve! 2020. The site is a unique end terrace, turning the corner of 19th century houses. It was originally a school, subsequently extended and altered for residential use. The layout suffered throughout its history with awkward internal circulation, two entrances and long corridors. Changing the linear cellular nature of the existing house involved a radical rethink to the spatial organization. The house was stripped back to its bare brick skin and an extension on the front façade served to allow a new entrance in the center of the plan, enabling the formation of a largely open plan ground floor.
