Villa La Fonte, Tuscany, Italy

The refurbishment of a farmhouse in Tuscany
Project completed 2008, Private Client
RD Architects, Cambridge Office

High in the hills between Siena and Florence, the group of buildings would have formerly been used for agricultural purposes. The upper parts formed very basic living accommodation and much of the ground floor areas were used as animal shelters. Although this use had long since ceased, the areas had not been modified. The ground was still compacted earth, the perimeter water troughs were still present along with the stable doors.

All the buildings were within the same ownership and so our client, based in the UK, was able to purchase a complete estate, including several hectares of surrounding land and olive groves.

Several ugly, non-original out buildings were demolished and the beautiful archetypal Tuscan farm buildings were restored. Drainage was to a new septic tank with LPG used for occasional winter heating. Landscaping works formed a significant part of the project with a new swimming pool.
