Town House, Oxford, OX1

Refurbishment and contemporary extension of an Oxford Town House.
Appointed 2011, Completion early 2013
RD Architects, London Office

This house is in a prime location in the central Oxford Conservation Area.

A former nunnery, our brief is to completely refurbish and extend in order to create a family home for our overseas client who is planning on returning to the UK in late 2012.

The existing layout is problematic. The house is long and thin – meaning lots of corridors. Our solution is to relocate the primary form of access to the middle of the floor plan and to install a new stair serving enlarging the lower ground and first floors – both of which are to be enlarged. Our scheme proposes a significant increase in area but also, importantly, provides a far more efficient use of the space. Discussions have been held with Oxford City Council Planning Department and they have offered a very favourable response to the contemporary design proposals.
