Summer House, Chelsea, SW3
Contemporary room in the garden of a Grade II Listed London Town House
Project completed 2010, Private Client
RD Architects, London Office
Rodić Davidson Architects were commissioned to design a contemporary residential structure at the end of a beautiful Chelsea garden. Working to a modest budget, our design was crisp and modern and won the support of both the Planning and Conservation Officers at The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. We designed an adaptable space that incorporated a shower room thereby allowing for occasional spill-over residential use.
We integrated a drop-down bed that could be completely hidden when the room was to be used as an office. Sustainability was a priority and our design was extremely energy efficient with low embodied energy. We incorporated a highly insulated green roof, sustainable timber cladding and energy efficient glazing. As the garden formed part of the listed building, we had to apply to The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea for listed building consent, along with conservation area consent and planning consent.
