Refurbishment & extension of a Grade II Listed Chelsea Town House.

This Grade II Listed town house is situated in the heart of the Cheyne Conservation Area. The house had last been altered in the 1970’s and, although it had served its owners well as their London family home for almost 40 years, was in need of updating. Our clients, expecting a baby, purchased the property in 2009 and we set about designing a series of alterations to the layout that would make the property more ‘baby friendly’. The intrinsic ‘problem’ with the house was that the original configuration of many smallish rooms, two per floor, over four floors, is not ideal for modern family living. The basement was dark and the living space fragmented over two floors. Our solution was to reorganise and extend. We obtained consent for a subterranean extension under the garden, thereby transforming the space and usability of the original basement of the house. We also obtained Listed Building consent for an infill glazed closet wing extension, thereby providing additional floor area and opening-up the space. Finally we obtained Planning and Listed Building consent for an office / summer room in the garden. We designed a modern & adaptable space – we integrated a shower room allowing for occasional spill-over guest accommodation with a drop-down bed that could be completely hidden when the room was to be used as an office.
