Family Home, Kensington, W8
Refurbishment of a substantial family home on a prime Kensington Road
Completed 2011, Private Client
RD Architects, London Office
Our client had recently purchased the property and wished to undertake some modifications before taking occupation. The substantial double-fronted property originally comprised two houses which had previously been combined. Our brief was to undertake a complete refurbishment: to install a passenger lift, to refit the bathrooms and kitchen and to integrate air conditioning throughout and, thereafter, to completely redecorate.
The property is within the De Vere Conservation Area in the heart of Kensington. Architect, Structural Engineer and Interior Designer were all appointed directly by the client with the contractor undertaking the work on a transparent open-book basis. The early involvement of the building contractor allowed the project to progress to site very quickly. A significant aspect of the project involved the installation of a Ground Source Heat Pump. This required a number of 100m deep bores to be drilled in the garden. In order to achieve this, a 14 tonne drilling rig was lifted over the roof of the house. Permission for a full road closure was obtained from The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC). The installation was undertaken by Geothermal International.
