Lea Valley, Hertford
A mixed-use development on island site bordered by the River Lea
Invited competition submission 2011, Developer Client
RD Architects, London Office
Rodić Davidson Architects were invited to prepare a competition submission for a new development in Hertford.
We proposed a mixed-use development – retaining business use units (and a restaurant) at ground floor level with new residential apartments above. We responded to the architectural brief by proposing a dual-aspect facade; thereby allowing ‘green edges’ to both river banks. This approach determined the design strategy for the site with the proposed design allowing both river banks to be used and enjoyed by the residents of the new apartments. We proposed a crisp and contemporary architectural design.
The residential values were underpinned by the necessity to provide at least one parking space per unit. At ground level, this would have required 50 spaces which could only have been located along one river bank. Even though it would be more expensive, we reasoned that the formation of a basement car park would provide security, the possibility of direct access to the apartments and, most importantly, dual river side access.
